A Fiftysomething Relaxes in Miami Beach

A Fiftysomething Relaxes in Miami Beach

We are so lucky here in Southeast Florida. Most of the time the sky is a brilliant blue with billowy white clouds. The beaches are some of the most beautiful and pristine in the world, with majestic palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze.

Yes! We are lucky! And when we get stressed out from the hassles of daily life, and we just can't face another minute of traffic on I-95, or ANYWHERE on Miami roads, we can just head east, and within minutes find ourselves lounging on the white sands, basking in the Florida sun.

The repetitive motion of the waves is so peaceful and relaxing; it's as if the ocean draws the stress right out of our wrung-out, strung-out little nervous systems, then massages our entire bodies from the inside out. Note: I say "little" with reference to our bodies, because in comparison to, say, a planet, we ARE little!

I repeat, we are lucky!Who else can say, I'll be right back, take a quick jaunt from the office, lay on the beach, then come back refreshed 15 minutes later?!?

Uh, the answer is, we in South Florida can!!!

But the question for us to ponder is DO WE?! Everyone knows we CAN, but everyone knows that just as people who live in Washington, D.C., never visit the Washington Monument unless they have relatives visiting from Florida, for instance, nor do we Floridians avail ourselves of the treasures of our own beaches!

Like last Tuesday, for instance. I was feeling tired and beat up; I could not do anything right. In fact, a few people assured me that I messed up in several different ways. "OK, that's it! I need to forget everything, and just go relax," I thought.

"Go to the beach," suggested a friend. "After all, the repetitive motion of the waves is so peaceful and relaxing; it's as if the ocean draws the stress right out of our wrung-out, strung-out little nervous systems, then massages our entire bodies from the inside out. Note: I say "little" with reference to our bodies, because in comparison to, say, a planet, we ARE little!"

So, off I drove. But somewhere around Dixie Highway, instead of heading east, my brain signals got crossed, and by total force of habit, I made a sharp turn towards the afternoon sun, and made a beeline to .... Publix! I am not proud of the fact that my reptilian brain cries out for food instead of the cosmic lull of the ocean, but cry out it does, and I must obey.

I always head for food when given half a chance, but even I can't explain why I ended up in the frozen food aisle last Tuesday, when my conscious intention was to head for the beach. It must be that food is my form of relaxation; it calms me down! I have even decided that if I ever get caught in a hurricane and have to run for shelter, I will grab a pillow and sleeping bag and head straight for Publix.

They have everything there -- most of all, FOOD! And, oh yeah, if I bring my portable, battery operated TV and DVD player, I can raid the movie rack. That can't be all bad, can it? I mean, that's the one time when it's not safe to go to the beach, anyway, right?
